First album that I bought was Traversata (Italian Music in America) by Beppe Gambetta, Carlo Aonzo, David Grisman. A showcase of three string masters (two acclaimed mandolinists and a renowned guitarist) performed a total of 15 tracks. Many of which are Italian classic songs. It sounds quite romantic. My dad is digging all the tremolos played by Carlo Aonzo. They were executed smoothly indeed.
The second albums I got is the Dance of The Comedians by Simon Mayor and the Mandolinquents. This album covers a wide range genres in different parts of world (Scottish, Chinese or Japanese?, Czech, Italian, French?). It has quite a few interludes between songs. Most of them are jokes cracked by Simon himself. OH! That's right Simon Mayor is my favorite mandolinist to day yet. He played brilliantly in this live recording. Unfortunately I could only order a CD copy instead of a digital one. It costs me a few extra bucks. It's not available anywhere I see online. It's fine I got to keep a copy of the CD and a colorful booklet. Nice album cover by the way!
In addition to the Simon Mayor CD, I ordered a Celtic Mandolin song book written by Simon Mayor. It's basically the sheet music from his Celtic Mandolin album, may be with about 10 extra songs in it. Each song has a pretty detailed explanation of how/what/why certain parts should be played. The beauty of it is that, most of the songs printed in the book are arranged by Simon. He really spent his time figuring out the best possible decorated sounds.
